The founder of the company, Don Andrés Brugal Montaner, left his native Spain in order to become rich in the Caribbean. After he had learned the craft of rum production in Cuba, he was drawn to the Dominican Republic, more precisely to Puerto Plata, around 1855. The rums of the Brugal company still mature in this city today. There, after a few years, he succeeded in developing a manufacturing process that ensures the consistent quality of the rum.
